Young Eagles

EAA 1600, the Delaware Chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association will be hosting a Young Eagles Event on the third Saturday of the month on the following dates:

  • May 20, 2017 – Delaware Airport
  • June 17, 2017– Delaware Airport
  • July 15, 2017– Delaware Airport
  • August 19, 2017– Delaware Airport
  • September 16, 2017– Delaware Airport
  • October XX, 2017 – My Place Airport, near Cardington

These dates appear in the Event page of this website too.

Flying will begin at 9:00 AM and will continue through 12:00 PM.  Young Eagle Registration will be near the EAA Chapter Shelter House which is located at the north east corner of the terminal ramp.    Please use the gate that is just to the east of the terminal driveway/parking area.   There will be signs providing you directions.

All flying will be dependent on the weather conditions.  If the weather conditions are considered to be unsafe for conducting flights, the event will be cancelled.   Please check the EAA-DLZ Facebook site for any cancellation notices.   There are no rain dates planned, should the event be cancelled.  Parent or Legal Guardian must be present to sign the registration form.  This is a requirement for all youth that fly.   Unfortunately, grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, neighbors, etc. are all unable to sign the registration form due to EAA Insurance requirements.

There is a program for adults too, but those are not facilitated at the same time as the Young Eagles program.  Please inquire with one of the chapter leaders if you are interested.

You will find lots of pictures of our Young Eagles here

Please note that there is now online sign-up available for YOung Eagles events.  The URL is:  https://www.flightsquid.com/event/2818  The online process allows parents to preregister their children, read and sign all the legalese, and then bring a printed copy of the release form with them to the event. This should be a great time saver for everyone.

EAA YOUNG EAGLE FLIGHT PLAN

Follow the EAA Flight Plan and watch your aviation dreams take off! This five-step journey is designed to inspire young people and keep them flying after their Young Eagles flight.  There is no requirement to complete all steps.  Many youth only participate in the first step, but we encourage all youth to complete the program if they are interested in aviation in general or a career in aviation.

STEP 1: YOUNG EAGLES® FLIGHT

If you’re between ages 8-17, you have the opportunity to go flying with an EAA member volunteer pilot.

Get ready to have the experience of your lifetime. We’ll show you how to become a Young Eagle and taste the freedom of flight that most people only dream about.

First, read about what to expect on your first flight. Next, find a flight and locate your nearest Young Eagles coordinator. That person will help you get in contact with a Young Eagles pilot, who’ll schedule your flight.

YOUR FLIGHT EXPERIENCE

Your Young Eagles® flight will last approximately 20 minutes.

Here’s how your flight will go:

  1. On the ground
Your pilot explains what will happen during the flight. You may talk about the airplane, review an aeronautical chart (or map), and complete a careful “walk-around” preflight inspection of the airplane.
  2. Just before takeoff
Your pilot explains the interior of the airplane, including the operation of the aircraft door, safety belts, and instrument panel.
  3. In the air
The flight lasts between 15 and 20 minutes.
  4. Back on the ground
There’s more time for you to ask questions about the flight. Your pilot is happy to tell you more about flying and his or her particular airplane.

You also get an official Young Eagles logbook with a personal code to activate your free EAA Student Membership and Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course.

STEP 2: EAA STUDENT MEMBERSHIP

An EAA Student Membership is available FREE of charge to any young person age 8 – 18 who has completed a Young Eagles® flight. STEP 3: SPORTY’S LEARN TO FLY COURSE

As an EAA Student Member, you’ll receive free access to Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course ($199.99 value).

This interactive online course uses real-world video and incredible 3D animations to help you learn the basics of flight. Plus, EAA will reimburse you when you pass your FAA written exam ($165 value).

Why take the Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course?

See real-world video: Sporty’s puts you in the cockpit for a “pilot’s-eye-view” of everything you’ll see during your flight lessons.

It’s a complete course: The course focuses on learning to fly, not just memorizing test questions. The course is so complete that the FAA accepted it for use in approved flight schools.

Get a personalized training experience: Learn on your schedule, at your own pace. Skip ahead or review segments several times over.

Written test endorsement: You get the necessary signoff to take the private pilot written test—automatically. No instructor needed.

EAA will reimburse you when you pass your FAA written exam! ($165 value)

Is there an age requirement?

The course is recommended for people ages 13 and up.

How do I sign up?

On the back cover of the logbook you received from your Young Eagles pilot is an access code for your free EAA Student Membership. Once you sign up, register for Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course at the same time.

Sporty’s will e-mail you directly with your username and password. If you are already an EAA student member and need access, just call 800-843-3612 to get started.

What if I don’t have an access code?

You can register for your free EAA Student Membership even if you didn’t receive an access code from your pilot. All you need to do is answer a few questions about your flight so your status can be verified.

When can I begin my course?

Sporty’s will send you an e-mail with your username and password. Once you receive that you can begin the course.

How is the course set up?

Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course lets you decide which pilot certificate works best for you - Sport, Recreational, or Private. After you complete the first three volumes of the course, you’ll receive a Free First Flight Lesson, and EAA will reimburse the cost of the FAA written test.

STEP 4: FIRST FLIGHT LESSON

After completing the first three volumes of the Sporty’s Learn to Fly Course, you’ll qualify for a free first flight lesson at a flight school of your choice ($130 value).

This step is easy - EAA will contact you as soon as you qualify for your free lesson!

How do I qualify?

To be eligible for the free flight lesson, you must have taken a Young Eagles® flight, completed the first three volumes of the Sporty’s course, and be at least 13 years of age.

OK, so I qualify, now what?

EAA will e-mail you a form for your parents to sign. Once EAA receives the completed form, we will send you a flight lesson voucher with instructions on how to redeem it.

How do I find a flight school?

Search for flight school in your area.

Is there an age requirement for my flight lesson?

Yes, you must be between the ages of 13 and 19.

Can I give my voucher certificate to someone else?

No. The voucher is only valid for the Young Eagle listed on the voucher certificate.

What should I do after my first flight lesson?

You are encouraged to sign up for more flight lessons and work toward earning a pilot certificate!

 STEP 5: FLIGHT TRAINING SCHOLARSHIPS

There’s help out there to support your aviation dreams! You have access to flight training and college scholarships through EAA, including the EAA Air Academy.

These scholarships are underwritten by donors who want to help you achieve your dream of learning to fly.
